I lost direction… the Shetland islands! I hoped for great biking, but I got a lot of rain! I was picked up by the road once, because the couple felt pity with me. I mainly stayed in hotels and route planning was hard. Left a day early, but will be back. Ferry to Aberdeen, train to Inverness, biking through the highlands, which was beautiful! Finally some trees again. Looming question, where to next? I decided for Ireland. Not a lot of kilometres…

That rain! I arrived on the Shetland Islands after a pretty comfortable ferry ride. Had to wait a bit until I could check in to my hotel and was really excited to get biking! Went down to West Burra. Weather not great, but acceptable. Made a quick stop at a bus stop and it started pouring. Really so that I didn’t want to leave. Waited for half an hour, didn’t get better. A can stopped and asked whether they could take me somewhere. First I said no, thanks. I wanted to bike. Then I thought again and agreed. They brought me to Scalloway where I had seen a coffeeshop. They didn’t had space for me. Walked to the grocery. And saw a hotel. Checked whether they had a room and called it a day. Good decision. Rain just got worse, really bad. Ate sweets, watched some documentary about the Shetland islands and met somebody who gave me a lot of information about what to see. What I had seen so far was very beautiful already and I looked forward to the next day.

EuroVelo 1 - slow sign along the road in the Scottish Highlands

Back on the mainland! And I got trees, plenty of them. I saw the royal Scotsmen train, biked on beautiful paths and the rain was not too bad. Only in the morning, something mysterious happened. The clothes in one bag were soaking wet. I have no clue what happened, need to keep an eye on that. Glad that I decided to bike from Inverness south, I would have definitely missed some beautiful landscapes! On the way up north, I took a route through Fife and the east coast.

Long way up, long way down! Very enjoyable! Beautiful landscapes and great routes. Weather so la la, but not bad. One thing though, running out of power and the campsite was not too helpful. The last few campsites really locked off their electricity, not a single plug that could be used… Totally different topic. When I came up north all was yellow. Now it has changed and I see a lot of purple flowers. It’s great to see these changes. And nature will survive us! Look at these little plants get through the tarmac! Meaning, humans might kill themselves, but nature is stronger and will find its way.
